hi my name is pigeon

in my spanish lesson last week i learned that "Paloma" (pigeon) is a woman's name.

I knew about Paloma Picasso, but not the other.

It's a cute nickname in English, I always thought :)

i'll agree that paloma sounds nice for a ladies name but not in english. eek.

it reminds me of the time i tried to explain to one of my students what a pigeon was. i didn't have the spanish word for it at the time so i used more english words to explain. i came up with "city bird", you know every city has those birds in the center.

I always thought paloma was a dove, not a pigeon. The song una paloma blanca is about a dove.

Interesante. Parece que desde el punto de vista científico no hay diferencia entre "pigeon" y "dove", de modo que los dos términos resultan sinónimos, aunque cada uno de ellos tiene connotaciones que dependen de los hábitos lingüísticos. (Como en el caso de "raven" y "crow", es poca la ayuda que nos puede ofrecer un diccionario común a quienes no somos angloparlantes nativos).
